UPDATE: Oklahoma County is among 28 included in a tornado watch issued Saturday afternoon.

The tornado watch, issued by National Weather Service in Norman, covers most of central and western Oklahoma and is in effect until 9 p.m.

Other counties included in the watch: Alfalfa, Blaine, Caddo, Canadian, Cleveland, Comanche, Cotton, Custer, Dewey, Garfield, Garvin, Grady, Grant, Greer, Jackson, Jefferson, Kay, Kingfisher, Kiowa, Logan, Major, McClain, Noble, Stephens, Tillman, Washita and Woods.

Radar indicated a cluster of showers and thunderstorms extending from Lawton to Chandler. The risk of strong to severe thunderstorms will increase by late afternoon, according to the service.

9:30 a.m.: A late morning rain kicked off what could be a nasty day of weather in central Oklahoma.

Lightning and wind preceded a moderate rainfall that started just after 9 a.m., but the greatest concern for severe weather will come later in the day.

Strong and possibly severe thunderstorms could roll into the region by early afternoon, but chances for severe storms will pick up later in the afternoon and early evening, according to the National Weather Service in Norman.

Frequent lightning, hail and wind gusts — possibly in excess of 70 mph — are possible as the storm rolls in. There is a chance for tornadoes as well, according to the service.
