Feedback from readers greater than every award

Last Sunday, we published a piece in The Oklahoman titled, “Deadly Force.”

It was researched and written by Juliana Keeping, and it detailed the police shootings in Oklahoma City over the past 10 years.

We also built a special presentation on NewsOK, including an interactive graphic with police reports on all the shootings. That was available to non-subscribers on NewsOK on Monday.

The feedback on Juliana’s report was unanimous. Our readers appreciated it. Here are some snippets:

You have taken a thorough and objective look at this issue, when many reporters in the media would treat the police with hostility.  The truth is the police perform a dirty job that nobody else wants to do, and they should be thanked for their sacrifices, not condemned.

And …

I like reading the paper because of the quality and depth of the articles written. I get far more information from these articles than I ever would from a television report. A very good example of the quality work at The Oklahoman is the article written by Juliana Keeping on “Deadly Force.” Thank you from a longtime subscriber.

There was more, but I only have so much space.

On the same day, Heather Warlick ran a Mother’s Day story about Joy and Jener Ludwig from Kingfisher. Joy is the mother. Jener is the son with a rare genetic disorder. Heather reported on the impact on his family and how the Kingfisher community has supported them.

Again, Heather and her editors received praise from our readers and our community.

I saved the article (when I was clipping my coupons) and I just read it. GREAT article!

And …

Lovely article … Lots of great information and insight. So glad Dr. Miller got to contribute.

We cover our community. Sometimes it’s good news. Sometimes it’s bad news. Sometimes it’s news that’s tough to hear. Sometimes it’s ugly but necessary.

And we get our share of criticism. But we get a mountain of messages of thanks. I just wanted to share a few, especially in light of all the accolades and awards we’ve received in our news and information center the last couple weeks

Those awards include NewsOK.com being named best website in both the Society of Professional Journalists awards in April and the AP-Oklahoma News Editors awards this month. At the AP awards, reporter Adam Kemp was named Best New Journalist. And the photographers won way too many awards to mention, and almost too many for a journalism school graduate to count.

The awards are nice. They tell us that our industry respects our work. But we’re not here for the awards.

We’re here for our community. Knowing that our readers appreciate hearing about the good, the bad, the tough and the ugly is even better than the awards.

We’ll keep publishing either way – both in The Oklahoman and on NewsOK.com.
