The Norman City Council is considering asking voters to extend a half-cent sales tax that expires Sept. 30. Would you vote to extend the tax? Why or why not?

Your thoughts!
I will not vote to extend the tax.
First of all, it was touted as being 'temporary'. Extending the tax would not be temporary.
Secondly, it is also touted that such-and-such important jobs would be filled by this tax. While providing/creating jobs for important areas may (or may not) be necessary, they should not be contingent upon a "TEMPORARY" tax.
Finally, I agree with others that this tax has served its purpose.
I would, however, consider a permanent tax. That is, of course, if it were fully justified.
Otherwise, enough is enough already!

I'm against it, permanent or temporary. We need to send a message to our council that they must be more pro-business in order to increase our tax revenues. They have neglected economic development for too long. Even the TIF was a struggle to pass, and the TIF is exactly what Norman needs. Send the message now. Elect a pro-business council in the spring. Then, if the new council suggests the tax increase, we should consider it.

I would vote against it. They haven't spent the money they raised with the first tax increase. They need to be more pro-business and raise the funds from new business not from further taxing the citizens.

a statement was made they had to make cut backs in the norman employees when they had the tax, why would it be any different with the extended tax..if it would go to cleaning out Thundrbird lake ... its filling in fast .. i would be for it.

Why would I vote for a tax increase that goes to the general fund. Even the Unions don't support it. If they were proposing a new park to the West side (still no major park west of downtown) or something we can see, I would be for it.

I will vote against it. It has served it's purpose and I have not seen a valid reason to continue.

I would also vote against it. If their estimation of time was correct for meeting the needs for the temporary tax increase, there should not be a need to continue it.

I agree with Councilor Thompson, that the tax should be made permanent (with restrictions as to its use). Why put Norman through the cost of an election every time we renew something that everyone seems to agree is worthwhile?
