A judge sentenced a career criminal to 140 years in prison Friday, saying he “deserved every day” for robbing and sexually assaulting a Subway restaurant worker after she'd made him a free sandwich.
John Robert Murphy, 31, was convicted last month of robbing, raping and kidnapping the 22-year-old woman, who was alone when she was held against her will and assaulted the morning of May 27 inside the restaurant at 6010 S Western Ave.
After robbing the worker at gunpoint, Murphy had her lock the doors and turn off the lights. He then ordered her to the men's restroom, where he assaulted her on the floor, prosecutors said.
“Mr. Murphy, you deserve every day of that 140-year sentence,” Oklahoma County District Judge Cindy Truong told the defendant.
According to court documents and video surveillance, the woman begged the defendant “not to hurt her because she has babies.” The defendant ignored her pleas, telling his victim, “I'm a sick (expletive)! Do you feel powerless? Do you feel helpless?”
After assaulting the woman, Murphy took her cellphone and keys and left.
Police arrested him a short time later after he crashed the woman's car into a tree.
Assistant District Attorney Suzanne Lavenue told the judge the woman made Murphy a sandwich for free “out of the kindness of her heart” because she thought he was homeless.
