"We are choosing to use the centennial as a way to spotlight the contributions made to our state and to our nation by Native Americans,” said Norman librarian Julie Moring in a news release.

In a special ceremony at 1:15 p.m. in the library's Lowry Room, three guests will be honored for their contributions to society and for positively representing their native culture — educator Mary Jo Watson, author Cynthia Leitich Smith, and astronaut John B. Herrington.

Watson, who is a member of the Seminole Nation, developed the Native American Art History program at the University of Oklahoma.

Smith, an award-winning children's book author, writes books with American Indian characters and settings.

Herrington, a member of the Chickasaw Nation, is the first member of an American Indian tribe to fly in space.

Indian tacos will be for sale, and there will be a marketplace that features American Indian vendors and crafts.
