Film festival is making its debut in Norman

NORMAN — Norman often is referred to as the City of Festivals. This week, the city will add one more festival to its already extensive list when it hosts the first Vacant Era Film Festival. More than 40 films, including shorts, full-length features and documentaries, will be shown at the Sooner Theatre, 101 E Main, from Oct. 2-5, festival organizers said.

The four-day festival will focus on Oklahoma-made films but also will include national and international films, festival coordinator Meleah Montgomery said.

"The focus is on Oklahoma, but we have filmmakers coming in from all over the country,” she said. "People also will be coming from all over to see the films. They will be staying here and eating here, so it will be great economically for the city.”

In addition to four days of films, the festival will include art exhibits and live entertainment, Montgomery said.

Bill Moore, a film archivist with the Oklahoma History Center, will kick things off at 7 p.m. Thursday with a look at the history of Oklahoma filmmaking.

"He has a vault of Oklahoma films done ages and ages ago, some as far back as the 1930s,” Cory Allen, co-founder of Vacant Era Films, said. "He's going to speak about the history of filmmaking and show clips from his collections.”

A 9 p.m. showing of "Stark Fear,” a 1962 full-length feature film directed by Ned Hockman of Norman will follow.

Tickets for the festival are $15 per day. They are available at www.vacantera.com/tickets.htm. Tickets also will be available at the Sooner Theatre beginning Thursday.
