Filmmaker turns down invitation to speak at Hope
Published: November 6, 2009
HOLLAND, Mich. (AP) — An Oscar-winning screenwriter who is working on a new movie in southwestern Michigan has turned down an invitation from the English department at Hope College to speak about screenwriting.
This comes after administrators at the Christian college in Holland decided last month to scuttle plans for a student-proposed forum on sexuality featuring openly gay filmmaker Dustin Lance Black.
He won an Academy Award this year for his 'Milk' screenplay, about a gay San Francisco politician.
Administrators said they feared Black's participation in the forum would be too controversial. They encouraged him to accept the speaking invitation, but English professor David Klooster tells The Holland Sentinel for a story Friday that Black has declined.
