Music apps

Here are a handful of popular websites and mobile applications worth checking out if you like to discover artists you haven't heard of. While there are hundreds of ways to discover music, this is a sampling of what's available:

Twitter #Music, the new service from Twitter. Find it on the web at music.twitter.com and in the iTunes store.

Noisetrade.com. Get music from indie and emerging artists free or for a small donation of your choice.

Shazam. Hold your device close to a speaker where a song is playing, and the app will identify the song and artist for you. Find links to the applications for mobile and desktop devices that include Android, Windows, Windows 8, BlackBerry, iPad, iPhone and more at shazam.com.

Soundhound. Like Shazam, this mobile app will help you identify music that's playing. Find out how to get it for your individual device at soundhound.com/

Spotify. Stream any song you choose as part of your subscription, which runs from free, with ads, on a desktop. It's about $10 a month on your mobile device. Sign up at spotify.com.

Rdio, at rdio.com, is another radio subscription service.

Pandora, at pandora.com, is a popular free service that lets you design a radio station around your favorite music and artists. It learns from your likes and dislikes and plays related music.
