Emergency responders initially called to contain a grass fire were targeted by firework-wielding assailants Thursday night.

Fire crews attempting to extinguish a grass fire near Chamberlain Park, 4940 N. Frankfort Ave., requested a police presence after assailants began firing Roman candle-style fireworks at them around 8:30 p.m., Officer Leland Ashley said Friday.

The perpetrators also fired at the responding officers, making 2013 the second consecutive year in which Tulsa police were shot at with fireworks. Ashley could not recall any similar situations in preceding years.
