Fire danger very high to extreme today

Warmer and windier conditions will increase the risk for wildfires today throughout the state, and a red flag warning is effective in most of the western, northern and eastern parts of the state, according to the National Weather Service.

The fire danger in Oklahoma today ranges from very high to extreme as southerly winds will increase today, likely gusting in excess 40 mph.

The red flag warning is in effect from noon to 8 p.m. in Harper, Woods, Alfalfa, Ellis, Woodward, Major, Roger Mills, Dewey, Custer, Blaine, Beckham, Washita, Caddo, Harmon, Greer, Kiowa, Jackson, Tillman and Comanche counties. It is in effect from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Osage, Washington, Nowata, Craig, Ottawa, Pawnee, Tulsa, Rogers, Mayes, Delaware, Creek, Okfuskee, Okmulgee, Wagoner, Cherokee, Muskogee, McIntosh and Pittsburg counties.

A red flag warning means critical fire conditions are present or will be shortly.

The temperature in Oklahoma City at 9 a.m. today was 52 degrees. South winds were 22 mph. Today's high will be 70.

In Tulsa, the temperature was 51 degrees. South winds were 14 mph. Today's high will be 69.

Altus in Jackson County: 49 degrees.

Idabel in McCurtain County: 49 degrees.

Guymon in Texas County: 59 degrees.

Miami in Ottawa County: 49 degrees.

Oklahoma forecast

Today: Sunny and windy with highs in the upper 60s and 70s. Sustained winds of more than 20 mph and gusts near 40 mph likely by the afternoon.

Tonight: Mostly clear, lows in the upper 40s and 50s. Windy.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, highs in the 70s. Sustained winds near 30 mph, gusts near 40 mph.

Oklahoma City-area forecast

Today: Sunny and windy with a high near 70. South winds 16 to 19 mph, increasing to 26 to 29 mph, gusts as high as 38 mph possible.

Tonight: Mostly clear, low around 52. Winds between 25 and 28 mph, gusting to 36 mph.

Wednesday: Partly sunny with a high near 74. South winds between 26 and 30 mph, gusting to 39 mph.

Wednesday night: Cloudy, low around 55. Windy, 30 percent chance of showers.
