Secrets and symptoms of stroke

Abrupt weakness in the face, arm or leg, dizziness, difficulty speaking, sudden loss of vision in one eye, severe and sudden headaches — these are all symptoms of stroke, a disease that affects more than 700,000 people each year.

According to the American Stroke Association (ASA), stroke is the nation's third-leading cause of death, ranking behind heart diseases and cancer. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States.

Other stroke-related statistics are equally staggering. The ASA says that only 26 percent of the general public can name one or more of the warning signs of a stroke and that most patients, on average, wait 22 hours to seek medical attention.

“Stroke is a serious medical emergency and people should know the warning signs and risk factors,” said Janet Spradlin, Ph.D., Rehabilitation Psychologist with St. Anthony Hospital. “If people experience any of the warning signs of a stroke, they should immediately call 911. Every minute counts and receiving treatment quickly greatly reduces the risk of permanent damage.”
