Five more Oklahomans have died from the flu, the state Health Department confirmed Thursday.

Since late September, 58 Oklahomans have died because of complications related to the flu, the department said.

1,300 hospitalized

Meanwhile, almost 1,300 Oklahomans have been hospitalized because of the contagious respiratory illness.

Oklahoma is one of 12 states that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports has regional flu activity, a term that means there’s confirmed flu activity in at least two but less than half the regions of the state with recent laboratory evidence of influenza in those regions.

Sporadic activity might continue for some time, especially in places where activity started later, according to the CDC.

Public health officials recommend that people get their flu shots as long as flu viruses are spreading.
