Players have several ways to get their points across to referees. Some get angry. Some remain calm and choose to have a respectful chat. No one can be sure which style works best. But here are five of the more effective complainers in the NBA.


Kobe Bryant

Who is he: Los Angeles Lakers guard.

What he does: Work them.

Why it works: “He’s been in the league for like 18 years and he’s been doing it at a high level for so long. They all know him. He knows how to talk trash. He’s a mastermind.” — Lakers guard Nick Young.

Dwyane Wade

Who is he: Miami Heat guard.

What he does: Work them.

Why it works: “There’s the guys who are just always talking; at the foul line. There’s guys like Kobe, Dwyane Wade, the star players, I think they’re just nonstop. Who knows what effect that has over the course of the game, if it helps them or not? But those guys seem to always be in their ears.” — Nick Collison.

Reggie Evans

Who is he: Sacramento Kings forward.
