Fla. man says back pain drug contained meningitis
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man is suing a Massachusetts-based drug company at the center of a fungal meningitis outbreak alleging negligence, fraud and deceptive acts in their production of a steroid he says was contaminated.
In a lawsuit filed Thursday in Orlando, Godwin Mitchell claims a back pain drug he was injected with was manufactured by New England Pharmacy Compounding, Inc. and distributed to pain clinics in 23 states. It's been blamed in three Florida deaths.
Attorney Chris Chestnut says his client, an 87-year-old Marion County, Fla. retiree, was "otherwise a healthy gentleman" before being injected in September at a pain facility. He's currently in intensive care suffering from partial paralysis.
Among other allegations in the lawsuit is that the company engaged in acts not consistent with Food and Drug Administration standards.
