Oklahoma City-based psychedelic rockers The Flaming Lips released today “Peace Sword,” a six-song EP inspired by the upcoming film “Ender’s Game.”
“Peace Sword” was released today digitally and on CD. A limited edition vinyl will be released on Nov. 29, according to flaminglips.com.
The long-awaited film version of Orson Scott Card’s 1985 sci-fi novel set 70 years after a horrific alien war. Written and directed by Gavin Hood (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”), the movie adaptation features Asa Butterfield as Ender Wiggin, an unusually gifted child sent to an advanced military school in space to prepare for a future invasion. Ben Kingsley, Harrison Ford, Abigail Breslin, Hailee Steinfeld and Viola Davis co-star.
Lips frontman Wayne Coyne told Rolling Stone that after being commissioned to write a song for the film, the majestic ballad “Peace Sword (Open Your Heart),” the band’s creative juices started flowing. Even after recording the one song for the soundtrack, the band had no choice but to keep going.
“In the workings of getting to that song we’d already created a couple of these other little things that didn’t appeal to [the filmmakers] but started to appeal to us,” Coyne tells Rolling Stone.”We started to like these little ideas that we kept inserting into this one theme. [We were] just getting caught up in our own little fantasy.”
Look for my excellent colleague George Lang’s interview with “Ender’s Game” star Harrison Ford Friday in The Oklahoman and on NewsOK.
