Flaming Lips Twitter account hacked -- breakup a hoax, says manager

George Lang Published: October 24, 2013

Thursday afternoon’s Twitter post announcing the breakup of the Flaming Lips was the result of the band’s account being hacked. The band has not broken up.

Scott Booker, the Oklahoma City band’s longtime manager, told The Oklahoman that no one from the Flaming Lips organization, including lead singer Wayne Coyne or Warner Bros. Records, the band’s label, were responsible for the tweet.

“It wasn’t anyone in our camp who did it, even as a joke,” Booker said. “I mean, Wayne would have told me if he did it.”

The post was subsequently taken down, and at approximately 5:19 p.m., Coyne posted on his personal Twitter account, “The Flaming Lips twitter has been hijacked!!!!” A subsequent post on the Flaming Lips account said, “That last announcement was a bit premature.”

The Flaming Lips are preparing to release a five-song EP, “Peace Sword,” on Tuesday, featuring songs inspired by the new film “Ender’s Game,” due Nov. 1. Booker said the spoofed tweet was not any sort of promotional stunt.

“It was definitely a hack and not a stunt,” he said. “Warner Bros. definitely would not do something like this without letting me know, and I can tell you that in 25 years of working with the Flaming Lips and Warner Bros., I’ve never once had them come up with an idea like, ‘Hey — let’s say you broke up!’”

Booker said that Rick Gershon, the band’s chief publicist at Warner Bros. National Publicity, expressed similar surprise at the fake announcement.

“Gershon actually called me,” Booker said. “He said, ‘What do you know about this?’”
