ROSEMOUNT, Minn. (AP) — Flint Hills Resources says it plans to invest $300 million in two new projects at its Pine Bend refinery in Rosemount to produce cleaner fuels and improve energy efficiency.

The company says in a statement Wednesday that the projects include a combined heat-and-power system that would reduce energy use while generating enough electricity to cover roughly half the refinery's needs. The other project is a new process for removing sulfur and nitrogen from gasoline and converting it to fertilizer. The company says the process would help it meet federal low-sulfur standards for gasoline that are scheduled to take effect in 2017.

The projects require approval from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and are subject to final management approval. If approved, Wichita, Kan.-based Flint Hills expects to begin construction in 2015.
