GUTHRIE — The annual Muscular Dystrophy Association summer camp in Guthrie was canceled Friday after campers at other camps in the nation were diagnosed with swine flu.

Eleven of the approximately 1,800 children who have attended camps in Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Utah were diagnosed, said Bob Mackle, spokesman for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

"The really big issue is once they get the flu, a lot of these kids have compromised respiratory systems, and what that means is they get the flu and that very quickly turns into pneumonia and, of course, pneumonia can kill a lot of these kids,” Mackle said. "That’s why we made the decision we did.”

The Guthrie camp was scheduled to run Sunday through Friday at Central Christian Camp.

Fifty-six campers were booked into the camp this year, Mackle said.

He said the MDA is working with offices across the nation to plan makeup events, but nothing has been finalized.

"This is a huge event for these kids,” Mackle said. "Some of these kids look forward to this camp more than they look forward to Christmas.”
