Penny, our beagle in residence, has an appetite bordering on masochism. No stage of hell is too punishing to keep her snout from a rancid pile of rubbish for a single morsel of chicken two days removed from the table. An empty bacon package is an invitation to wallow in flavor valley.
Despite her mother’s Draconian diet implementation and a 20-pound weight loss over two years, Penny’s desire to eat what’s wrong vexes her. Oklahoma’s collective war with obesity also is at a major disadvantage in this, National Hot Dog Month. Oh, and it’s National Ice Cream Month, too. Probably doesn’t help that we have an expert local hot dog maker like Larry Schwab around to tempt us. Ever hear of a place called Braum’s? You don’t become the official hot dog of the Oklahoma Sooners as Schwab’s has without expertise in your field. The Braum’s franchise is becoming everything Baskin-Robbins used to be. Again, no accident. (Have you had their eggnog shake over the holidays?) There is a way to indulge without losing the battle of the bulge. The food you eat is only a portion of your overall health.
