High School Football: District 3A-3 Preview

Oklahoman Published: August 5, 2001

Bristow Purple Pirates
2000 record: 8-5
Head coach: Curtis Shelton, second season.
Assistants: Chris Morton, Brian Lomenick, Gerard Alexander, Freddie Hall.
Top players: Jake Tilley, QB, Jr., 5-11, 175; Kyle Cherry, TE, Jr., 6-2, 195; Ricky James, LB, Sr., 6-2, 205; Blake Viett, RB, Sr., 5-10, 190.
Outlook: Bristow is seeing things a lot better this year.

Sequoyah-Claremore Eagles
2000 record: 8-3
Head coach: Jody Iams, third season.
Assistants: Louis Walkingstick, Wayne Carter, Brannon Feese, Bob Campbell, Daryl Ping.
Top players: David Gregory, RB, sr., 5-7, 180; Jarrod Buckaloo, FB, jr., 5-9, 190; John Chambers, OL, sr., 5-11, 250; John Eagle, FS, sr., 5-9, 180.
Outlook: With Buckaloo and Gregory combining for 1,900 yards last season and a defense with seven starters returning, the Eagles should be better than a first-round playoff team. At question is the quarterback situation. The Eagles are deciding between Loren Standlee and Shon Farris. The Eagles faltered at the end of the season, losing three of their last four games.

Vinita Hornets
2000 record: 8-3
Head coach: Allen Forrest, third season.
Assistants: Rusty Rankin, Duwayne King, Mark Lippe, Chell Hooney.
Top players: Corbitt Taylor, FB, sr., 6-2, 225; Landon Lucas, RB, sr., 6-1, 195; Jacob Huffman, LB, jr., 5-10, 160; Clint Waggoner, OL, sr., 6-3, 230.
Outlook: Vinita made the playoffs last season after winning 3A-3. Much like Roland, which won 3A-4, Vinita was bounced out of the playoffs in the first round. Gone is Jermaine Landrum at quarterback, and the position falls to either Justin Porter or Brad Carter. Whoever it is will have a hard time duplicating the success of the offense of last season, which scored more than 30 points six times.

Sperry Pirates
2000 record: 6-5
Head coach: Robert Park, second season.
Assistants: Mike Juby, Uel Edwards, Ernie Ragland, Richard Ward, Greg Grimmett, Richard Akin.
Top players: Colby Wright, RB-SS, sr., 6-0, 175; Ramey Hill, OL-DL, sr., 6-0, 240; Mark Cambell, OL-SLB, jr., 6-0, 185; Mike Thomas, DE-TE, jr., 6-1, 235.
Outlook: The Pirates are a sleeper team. If Wright can duplicate what he did last season (1,785 yards rushing and 20 scores) they could make a serious push this season.

Berryhill Chiefs
2000 record: 4-6
Head coach: Gary Harper, ninth season.
Assistants: Pat Harper, Bill Adams, James Cheatham, Clay Wyse, Brad Kusik, James Mills.
Top players: Vance Barber, TE, sr., 6-3, 240; Brandon Williford, RB, jr., 6-0, 190; James Morris, RB, sr., 6-0, 190; David Stefanek, RB, sr., 5-8, 145.
Outlook: The Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first in nine seasons last year. Quarterback David Forbes became the first non-senior starting quarterback at Berryhill in eight years last year. He'll do it again this year as the junior will once again be the starter.
Berryhill lost four of its last five games last year after starting 0-2. That shouldn't happen this season.
