Food news worth chewing on this Mother's Day

Here's hoping all your Mother's Day plans are coming together. Mother fed us first, so let's feed her best whether by your own hands or in one of Oklahoma City's many fine restaurants.

Meanwhile, here are a few morsels of conversation that might come in handy at the Mother's Day table on Sunday:

• Speaking of special ladies, a few weeks ago, Oklahoma State University announced the theme for its 2013 Wine Forum will be “Of Wine, Women and the West.” The guest chef for next year's forum will be our very own Ree Drummond, also known as The Pioneer Woman.

While Ree, a renowned blogger, author and television personality, might not boast the culinary pedigree of 2011 guest chef Francis Mallmann, of Argentina, she certainly has pop culture clout to draw a large crowd for the event. The 2013 Honoarary Chair will be Beth Nickel, co-owner of Napa Valley wineries Far Niente, Dolce, Nickel & Nickel and EnRoute in the Russian River Valley. Both ladies were raised in Bartlesville.

• For years, patrons of the Crescent Market in Nichols Hills plucked prepared soups from the shelves as fast as Terry Sinclair could keep them filled. After Crescent Market closed, Sinclair decided to expand her operation. She found home for her soups at Bill Kamp's Meat Market and Whole Foods, but now she has her own store to sell sandwiches, salads, salsas and desserts to go with her soups. Soup Soup Catering and Carry-Out, 7606 N Western Ave., is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
