Football coverage showcases award-winning sports coverage

It’s always nice to have both OU and OSU football teams in big bowl games in early January.

I like it because it gives us a good early-year boost to our traffic on NewsOK. The fact is that days with a big football game on the schedule generally attract a larger audience than days without a big football game on the schedule.

Why?

Well, just look at the past few days.

  • Video highlights, video interviews and video analysis. We have a lot of video to accompany all the stories we have each day.
  • Blog posts before the game. Blog posts during the game. Blog posts after the game. We have predictions, analysis and quick asides. We even had travel blogs from Berry Tramel in case you wanted to know about the restaurants he visited. (I vote for Berry’s travel blogs as my favorite posts each month.)
  • Photos. Tons of photos. I can’t guarantee much of anything in this world, but I feel safe in making a solid guarantee that the Sugar Bowl and Cotton Bowl  photo galleries produced by our outstanding photographers will be the two most viewed pieces of content on NewsOK in January.
  • Around the Web stories. We posted a video from YouTube of a woman in the stands who was in a heated argument with OU fans as the game came to a close. Shortly after we shared the video, it seemed like every conversation I had the rest of the day started with something like, “Did you see that woman …” or some variation of that.
  • Live coverage. I love our live coverage. We pull a curated list of Twitter accounts that are providing live updates of the game. We do this for every game throughout the season. But the bowl game live coverage articles were exceptional. Immediate analysis, opinions and notes make it a great second screen for any sports fan.
  • Oh yeah — the articles. The articles are the basis for everything we do. The articles, columns, notes, analysis, sidebars and features tie everything together. And we have more articles anyone when it comes to our sports coverage of OU and OSU (and the Oklahoma City Thunder, for that matter). The articles are important because the most complete information is in those paragraphs. It’s also where we place all of the above — all the videos, photos, blogs, around the web pieces. It’s all there inside the articles.

These are the reasons I love early January football games.

These are also the reasons The Oklahoman’s sports department and NewsOK Sports has been honored as one of the top 10 sports websites in the country for five consecutive years.

The honor is given by the Associated Press Sports Editors, and it’s an honor that every newspaper wants every year. NewsOK Sports has had it for five consecutive years.

The other newspaper sites that have the honor each of the past five years?

You might have heard of them:

  • The New York Times
  • The Washington Post
  • USA Today
  • New York Daily News

We’re in good company.

But if you followed our coverage this past week, you know why.
