Football season: Not a time to fumble your diet

Published: November 28, 2006

For this football season, don’t fumble your diet. Rather, kick off the season with a little pregame plan that is sure to score a touchdown with your waistline.

Have a small snack before going to the game or before watching the game on television. Stick to a strategy for eating; don’t let your eating be dictated by the pace of the game.

Fill up on fruits, veggies and grains. Use a small plate to help you eat less. Drink sugar-free beverages to cut out extra calories. Instead of the traditional football fare of burgers and hot dogs, go with lean sandwich meats on whole grain breads.

Score a few points with fruit kabobs or pizza topped with loads of mushrooms, onions and green peppers. Try light popcorn, pretzels, baked tortilla chips with salsa, or apple slices and low-fat caramel dip instead of traditional chips and dip.

Modify those dip recipes with fat-free refried beans and fat0free or light sour cream. Sip on sugar-free hot chocolate for a sweet fourth quarter. Enjoy the season!
