Football to family, Hollywood to Hamas -- find it all on NewsOK

To me, summer ends the day of the Big 12 Media Days.

It’s about traffic patterns. Everything slows down just a bit during the summer. When school starts, it all picks up.

In the world of digital news, the school routine coincides with the community chatter turning to football. And that happens with Big 12 Media Days when traffic on the site — page views and users — turns from good to really good.

That’s what we saw last week: a high volume of normal summer news consumers, plus the additional volume of college football fans.

Our largest day of traffic in July came on Monday, the first day of that football chatter. But traffic wasn’t driven just by football; it was also our coverage of James Garner. News of his death came out Sunday morning, but on Monday users were clicking on our extensive photo gallery and archived coverage of his life. Couple that with the first day of Big 12 Media Days and all the sports blogs and video updates that resulted — that’s a ‘fall’ day in digital space.

But Wednesday’s most popular content was a terrific example of how NewsOK can serve so many different purposes. Check out the wide variety of information that led the charts on Wednesday.

1. SPORTS. The story and photos of Bob and Carol Stoops were the most-viewed items on NewsOK Wednesday. The first family of OU football took center stage in Dallas. See what I mean? Summer is over. It’s football season now.

2. INTERNATIONAL NEWS: International news doesn’t usually drive traffic on NewsOK, but the photo gallery of the fighting between Israelis and Hamas militants resonated with our users. Nothing can bring the importance of a story home more than great photos.

3. TRENDING TOPICS: The story that trended on your Facebook feed Wednesday was trending on NewsOK before you saw it on Facebook. A NewsOK web editor found the story of Twitter causing trouble for an airline passenger and shared the video and link to the Minnesota TV station early on Wednesday.

4. THOUGHTFUL ESSAY: A contributor through our feed from Deseret Digital Media caught our attention with an interesting read that we thought our readers would want to see, as well. We were right. It was about how people don’t need to be analyzed or judged, she said. ‘They need to be seen.’

5. LOCAL NEWS: Brianna Bailey reported about the development at NW 68 and Classen Boulevard, where there are plans for a day care center for employees of American Energy Partners LP.

That’s just our top five pieces of content on Wednesday. We had everything across the board, from trending topics to good reads to community news.

It’s just another example of how hard it is to define why you come to NewsOK. The reason changes every day.
