Berry Tramel: For Kevin Durant, the shooting has never been this bad

For one night, Greg Oden got the best of Kevin Durant in the eternal dual of the 2007 NBA Draft’s top two picks.

Of course, for one night, most anyone who ever laced up sneakers would have got the best of the Thunder Wonder.

Durant missed 18 of his 21 shots Sunday night at the Ford Center, the chief reason the good guys lost 83-74 to Portland and mathematically eliminated themselves from an unbeaten season.

Don’t laugh. You might see an 82-0 season before you see a superstar go 3-for-21 again. The last NBA player to take at least 20 shots and shoot worse than 14.3 percent was Detroit’s Rip Hamilton, who was 3-of-22 (against Portland) in December 2004.

Tossing the ball through the hoop from every corner of Oklahoma County seems to come natural for Durant, but Sunday night he couldn’t have hit a Del Rancho chicken fry if you’d have spotted him the gravy.

"It got to the point where I would shoot the ball, it would look like it was going in and bounce right out,” Durant said. "Seven or eight times in a row. Never happened to me before.”

Never? "Nope,” he said.

Not on the D.C. playgrounds or in Austin pickup games or in that rookie season in faraway Seattle?

"Nope.”

Believe him. That’s a Cleveland Browns quarterback percentage, 14.3 percent. That’s an A-Rod World Series.

Would have been nice for the Thunder to stay undefeated with the Lakers coming to town Tuesday night. But the Boomers will beat no one with Durant going 3-for-21.

Clang, clang, clang went the trolley, all night long, as Durant kept bouncing shots off the rim. Durant missed eight of his first 11 shots, then cooled off, missing his final 10.

Meanwhile, Oden, the star-crossed 7-footer picked ahead of Durant in 2007, showed why one day he will be an all-star. Oden had 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting, 10 rebounds and a blocked shot.

Every team in the league still would take Durant and his otherworldly skill set. But Oden’s a big-timer, too.

Sunday night’s lesson for Durant? Don’t quit, even when the rim becomes an upside down peach basket.

In NBA years past, Durant "would have been out of his head” had he shot like this, Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "Would have said, ‘I’m going somewhere and hide.’”

But against Portland, Durant stayed even-keeled. Didn’t force shots as the frustration mounted and played reasonably decent defense.

"That was a bright spot,” Brooks said. "You see maturity taking place right before your eyes.”

Durant mentioned his captaincy and seems to be taking it far more seriously than your usual NBA ceremonial title.

"That’s part of me growing,” Durant said. "I gotta lead my team in the tough times and the good times.”

Durant will have few tougher times than Sunday night.

I'm not saying Durant isn't a great player, he is. He would start for every team in the NBA. But being a great player and a starter does not equate to "superstar". Using that logic we would have several dozen "superstars" all playing at once. Somebody was comparing Durant to Jordan, Bird, and Magic, which is completely ridiculous. Become an all-star, win some championships, and then we can start talking about "superstar". Since these things are never going to happen for Durant in OKC I think it's safe to say that he is not, or probably never will be, a superstar.

Snack, Durant is going to be an allstar and is a superstar in the making. Give me one team in the NBA that he would not start for at this time?
The Thunder need to tweak their offense, the opponents have watched film and are sitting on their plays. Almost running to the spots where Durant is going to shoot.

Hey Tramel...

Before you write your next article... Stay sober for a few hours. Everyone has an off night. Aparently you are included. Like when you wrote this trash.

Paul i admitted i had a typo so obviously i know the difference between our and are and I was typing quickly and it happens you rotten bitter turd. what happened in your life to cause such anger and hostility? and where were you educated since you seem to think you have a higher intellect than anyone on here? I'm a junior at Oklahoma State, and i graduated from Northeast Academy in OKC so go ahead and take your next cheap shot you coward.
Nathan, oklahoma city - Nov 3, 2009 at 2:32 pm
The odds of Durant being in the same sentence as those legends are not good - As you may notice they all played for franchises that are bigger markets in the NBA and have been around for awhile - the league will find a way to get him to a bigger market even if he would rather not - meanwhile yes enjoy his "developement"

"Paul excuse my grammatical error i guess im not perfect like you"----Nathan, being perfect has nothing to do with it.

Are you actually admitting you don't know the difference between using the word "are" with "our" in proper context?

Are you okieland educated? I would imagine so.

Just noticed, Tramel refers to Durant as a "superstar". Excuse me, but this guy isn't even an all-star yet. How many other zero-time all-stars are referred to as "superstars"?
snack, Portland - Nov 3, 2009 at 12:48 am
The game was weird because both teams stunk. Sorry for the fans that had to watch this. I'm a Blazer's fan but embarrassed by the way we played. We actually played a lot better in the loss to Houston.

Durant is lot like Magic, except: Magic was NBA finals MVP his rookie season at 20. He played center in game six collecting 42 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. You probably think Clay Bennett is honest too.

Paul excuse my grammatical error i guess im not perfect like you... but in my opinion the mistake in which your parents made when they conceived you is far superior to my typo, you sad person who constantly attacks other people on a chat board probably because youre too pathetic to do anything with your own life. everyone should pray for Paul, that he might find happiness in his life and be able to look himself in the mirror without being disgusted.
Nathan, oklahoma city - Nov 2, 2009 at 9:02 pm
C'mon Steve, don't be ridiculous. Sure Durant is a great player, but there's lots of great players in this league. He will not be there with Jordan, Russell, and Bird, because to do so he will have to be one of the greatest NBA players of all time. Durant has a great upside, but lets face it, he's a zero-time all-star that so far has played for 2 last place teams. By the way, we have a great player here in Portland named Brandon Roy. And nobody here nor anywhere else is annoiting him the next Michael Jordan.

It is strange that you say that because Durant isn't like any of those players. And then when you go on to say "great ownership" and "the best fans", I take my hand from the keyboard and start scratching my head.

No player is going to be incredible all the time. Kevin Durant is young. He will be up there with Jordan, Bird, Magic, Russell as his career progresses. He is that good. Watching him develop last year was worth the price of my season tickets. We are very fortunate to have him here in OKC. He's fortunate to be here with great ownership and some of the best fans in the NBA.

David, Topeka - Nov 2, 2009 at 3:26 pm
Want to know what really happened? You could read the Seattle Times: "Once my shot wasn't falling, I tried to get to the line," Durant said. "I think I did a decent job of that. I've got to make those free throws. But I've got to make those shots where I was wide open or getting to the rim or pulling up in the lane."

For the record, Berry, the chances are stronger of you making an ass of yourself, than the Thunder winning all 82 games, but stats aside, I honestly think you owe Clay, Kevin, heck, the whole Thunder team, an apology for being so down on them just because Texas actually won the OSU (which i for one have never seen you be a big O-State fan EVER)/Texas game.
David, Topeka - Nov 2, 2009 at 12:38 pm
Tramel, I seriously think you should resign from the Daily Oklahoman, if you can't say anything nice about the players on the Thunder, especially since most of them like Durant, make more than you do in one year, than you do in a decade, bud! Try goin to Seattle to report, they'll love your style up there!

Who wrote this article? It reads like some stoned teenager’s text message gone awry. The quote, “He couldn’t have hit a Del Rancho chicken fry if you’d have spotted him the gravy” is beyond comment and while I am at it, what is up with this “Boomer” thing for the Thunder? For the record, the word “Boomer” is sacred to me and I could kill for a Del Rancho Chicken Sandwich so Barry owes some apologies.

Not that a had a ton to begin with but I loose respect each time I read a story from these sports clowns. So he had a bad game, write about that, write the facts and leave all the cute phrases and nicknames out. You sound like an idiot on the radio and sound like one when you try to force nicknames that people don't want or like.

Serves him right for parading on the Texas sideline Saturday night. Someone needs to inform this kid-who happens to be a great BB player- that his bread and butter now comes from north of the Red River. I don't expect him to divorce himself from his alma mater, but seriously, he could be a little less in-your-face about it. He played at UT for one year. He's on his second year for the OKLAHOMA CITY Thunder.

A-Rod has two hits in the world series. Yes both were big hits but not MVP worthy.

Probably bad karma from his appearance at the OSU/Texas game. An increase in his productivity and an all around increase in team foul shooting success and we had that game.

Tram, trying to create a nickname that no one wants will only make people ignore your columns and bad-mouth you at the water cooler and/or coffee machine. The rest of your "cutsie" remarks are somewhat amusing, but not this nickname. What's wrong with calling them the "Thunder"?

Poor shooting for both teams from the field and bad free throw shooting for the Thunder. Very unusual to miss free throws like they did.

Portland's defense has nothing to do with how Durant shoots. That's just crazy talk. That's like saying the new practice facility helps his shooting.

Both teams played ugly. And Portland's defense was at least partially responsible for Durants poor shooting. You know, win or lose, either team can't feel very good about this game.
