Veterans from five wars quietly bowed their heads Tuesday morning, some wiping away tears, as a bugler played taps.

The quiet and solemn moment broke what was mostly a celebration.

Patriotic music was played and gracious appreciation was paid to the many veterans who attended a Veterans Day event at the 45th Infantry Division Museum.

Several hundred people attended the Veterans Day ceremony, many remembering those who never came home, as a wreath was laid at the base of the museum’s flagpole as taps was played.

"Each generation, there are young men and women who stepped up and have served our country selflessly,” retired Lt. Col. Steve Russell said.

"I’m also heartened when I see young soldiers who are doing it today. They weren’t forced to. They chose to.”

Maj. Gen. Harry M. Wyatt III, the state’s adjutant general, focused his keynote speech on the theme of sacrifice, referencing the movie "Saving Private Ryan.”

He recalled a scene at the end of the movie, in which a veteran wept at the tombstone of a soldier who saved his life by sacrificing his own.
