Former jail inmate files lawsuit in finger injury

SHAWNEE — A former Pottawatomie County jail inmate has filed a federal lawsuit claiming his middle finger was crushed in a cell door.

Julius Hackney, 24, alleges that on Feb. 20, 2006, he was entering a cell at the jail and an employee triggered it to shut before he passed through the entry way.

Hackney is claiming civil rights violations and negligence on the part of the jail for not properly training jailers to use the door. He also alleges jail officials failed to treat his injury in a timely manner.

Attorney Bryan Garrett said Hackney's injury required surgery, which he didn't get until he was in the custody of the state Corrections Department in July 2007.

Hackney is requesting damages in excess of $75,000 and attorney fees.
