Former narcotics agent sentenced in gun-smuggling scheme

Francisco Javier Reyes, 30, of Oklahoma City, was an Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Control agent when he committed his crimes between March and July 2010.

Some of the weapons Reyes had a hand in smuggling ended up in Mexico.

Reyes pleaded guilty last year to one count each of conspiracy and transferring firearms to an out-of-state resident as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

The maximum penalty for each charge is five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

At a Sept. 29, 2010, hearing in which he pleaded guilty, Reyes said he was hired by Gregorio Morales-Martinez, an undocumented Mexican immigrant, to buy “military-type rifles” in Oklahoma and deliver them to Lewisville, Texas, a suburb of Dallas. Reyes, in turn, paid two of his friends — Kyle Wooten, who later died, and Jorge A. Blanco — $50 for each rifle they purchased for him.

Blanco, 26, of Stillwater, was charged with conspiracy and making false statements on Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives forms. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a year in prison.
