Former Oklahoma County judge's indignation is laughable

Former Oklahoma County District Judge Tammy Bass-LeSure took issue when a television reporter called her by her first name following a court hearing last week. “Did you call me Tammy?” she snapped.

The indignation is comical, especially given the reason why Bass-LeSure was leaving the courtroom. She and her husband had just pleaded guilty to adoption fraud. Bass-LeSure admitted to two felony counts of obtaining public assistance by false representation. Her husband, Karlos Bass-LeSure, pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining public assistance and trying to obtain public assistance, both felonies.

The case involved twin babies the Bass-LeSures adopted in 2010 after serving as their foster parents since 2008. Prosecutors alleged the couple gave the babies to the sister of the Bass-LeSure's bailiff, then misused some of the state funds provided for the care of the children.

What did “Tammy” expect to be called on her way out of the courthouse? Certainly not “Your honor.” That's a term of respect for judges. She forfeited any right to that salutation with this plea deal, in which she agreed to resign. How magnanimous of her!
