Former state Senate leader Mike Morgan has been suspended from practicing law because of his bribery conviction.

The Oklahoma Supreme Court on Thursday ordered Morgan's immediate suspension. Justices will decide later how long he will be banned from practicing law. He has been an attorney in Oklahoma since 1980.

Morgan, 58, of Stillwater, is appealing his conviction. A federal jury last March found the Democrat guilty of accepting $12,000 in bribes to influence legislation in 2007. He continues to claim he is innocent.

A judge on Jan. 8 sentenced Morgan to five years of probation. Morgan had faced up to 10 years in prison.

Morgan's suspension from practicing law was expected. After his sentencing last month, a relieved Morgan joked with the media about it.

“Well, I can wash your car,” he told reporters. “Anybody need their shoes shined? I guess I'll have to develop some new skills. … Obviously, I've got to do something different.”
