Former OSU pitcher Andrew Heaney agrees to deal with MLB's Miami Marlins
Oh, the posturing and ploys of last minute negotiations.
After confirming to media members on Thursday that they wouldn't sign Andrew Heaney, the Miami Marlins turned around and did the exact opposite, inking the former Oklahoma State lefty to a $2.6 million deal on Friday morning.
As the ninth overall pick, Heaney signed for $200,000 less than the full $2.8 million allotted to that slot. The agreement was reached hours before Friday's 4 p.m. CT deadline.
“It was a nervous, anxious, stressful time,” Heaney said in a text. “But I'm relieved it's over and ready to move on and play baseball.”
In the near-dead deal that was unexpectedly salvaged, both sides win.
Heaney, an Oklahoma City native, gets a secure financial future, capitalizing on his skyrocketed stock to become Oklahoma State's newest millionaire.
Miami, lacking on minor league talent, gets a polished lefty thought by many as the most developed pitcher available in last month's draft. He was the first collegiate left-handed pitcher selected.
As a junior, Heaney went 8-2 with 1.60 ERA, leading the nation with 140 strikeouts and spearheading an underrated OSU staff, which was second in the Big 12 with a 3.08 ERA.
