Delbert Long, who played on OU football’s 1955 and 1956 national championship team, died Thursday on his 78th birthday in Fairhope, Ala.

Long came to OU from his hometown of Ponca City. Sooner historian Harold Keith wrote that “coaches tried to drop him. He wouldn’t let them. He told them he was going to make the OU team if it was the last thing he did.”

Long made the team and was part of the class that never lost a game. He was third-team in 1954 and became an alternate back on the ’55 and ’56 teams, in the days of single-platoon football.
