Former University of Oklahoma golfer Jade Staggs, who played at Westmoore High School, defeated Japan's Rika Park 2 and 1 in the first round of match play at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links championship on Wednesday at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman.
Staggs was one of several golfers with Oklahoma ties who advanced to Thursday's round of 32.
Taylor Schmidt, who just finished her senior season at OU, went to 19 holes with Grace Na of Alameda, Calif., but Na prevailed with a birdie on the first extra hole.
OU's Chirapat Jao-Javanil beat Madison Opfer 1-up, and Sooner Anne-Catherine Tanguay defeated Chonlada Chayanun of Thailand 2 and 1.
Oklahoma State's Julie Yang defeated Lakareber Abe 4 and 3, and OSU's Kelsey Vines downed Clariss Guce 6 and 4.
Lawton native Lucy Nunn lost to Lacey Fears of Bonaire, Ga., 5 and 4.
Lucy Li, the 10-year-old from Redwood Shores, Calif., lost her first-round match 3 and 2 to Ember Schuldt of Sterling, Ill.
Play continues Thursday with the round of 32 matches, followed immediately by the round of 16. The quarterfinals and semifinals are Friday, and the 36-hole championship match is set for Saturday.
