Ronnell Lewis is back in Oklahoma and back in football.
The former OU edge rusher has signed with the Tulsa-based Oklahoma Defenders of Champions Professional Indoor Football League. On Tuesday, the Defenders announced Lewis’ signing via press release.
Lewis was a fourth-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions in 2012, but played in just eight games in his only NFL season. The Lions cut the defensive end/linebacker hybrid in late August.
Lewis received a six-month deferred sentence after pleading no contest to charges stemming from a bar fight in April. He was also arrested Sept. 2 on suspicion of DUI in Henryetta.
“I’ve learned a lot over the last year and a half about giving back being a small town guy,” Lewis said via the Defenders’ press release. “Now having the opportunity to play in Tulsa, I get to be around my family and the community I grew up in. I want to help in the community, mentor youth, and give back in any way that I can.”
The Dewar native had 118 tackles, 10 sacks and two interceptions in three seasons at OU. The Defenders' season opens in March.
