— A former employee of the Pottawatomie County treasurer's office accused of stealing cash in connection with property tax transactions has been charged with embezzlement, court officials said Thursday.

Jamie Lynn Pickard, 31, of Shawnee, was charged Monday in Pottawatomie County District Court. She is free on $5,000 bail, the sheriff's office confirmed.

Pickard is accused of stealing $25,000, according to a charging information sheet. She confessed to taking $4,000, according to an arrest affidavit.

Pickard said “she would receive cash from a tax payer and give them a receipt,” and then “would void out the receipt and pocket the cash,” the affidavit states.

The thefts occurred between Sept. 23, 2013, and Jan. 27, the affidavit states.
