Former Seminole State coach Jeff Shafer will take over as the baseball coach at Edmond Santa Fe after the district's board of education approved the hire Wednesday.

“It’s one of the premier jobs in the state,” Shafer said. “Year in and year out, they turn out a lot of good student athletes, guys that go on to play in college and in professional baseball.”

Shafer replaces Lonny Cobble, who resigned after last season to take the head coaching job at Oklahoma Christian University. Cobble had been the only head coach in the program's history.

Shafer resigned at Seminole State after his team was ruled ineligible for the postseason because the coaches did not report their statistics to the National Junior College Athletic Association, as is required.Seminole State eventually was allowed to compete, but Shafer was not allowed in the dugout for the playoffs.

“You feel honored when you get a job like this, with the rich tradition and great history,” Shafer said. “In coaching, there’s a lot of great places out there at different levels, no matter if it’s high school, collegiately or professionally. I’ve been at all of those levels and enjoyed them all.”
