In a blog post on his website,, former Oklahoma wide receiver Ryan Broyles outlined his attitude as he attempts to come back from a third consecutive season-ending injury.

In the post, headlined “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” Broyles said the comeback from his latest injury—a torn Achilles tendon—has been difficult.

“Mentally I feel like I never skipped a beat but coming off an injury physically can be hard,” Broyles wrote. “Even when I felt like I couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel I knew my breakthrough was around the corner.

“Physically I am progressing nicely but there is still much work to be done. I’ll chip away at it one day at a time.”

The Lions’ wide receiver had three catches for 27 yards in Detroit’s preseason opener against Cleveland on Saturday and coach Jim Caldwell praised Broyles’ performance.

“Preseason games don’t count but they obviously mean a lot,” Broyles wrote. “We take those games seriously. Guys are fighting for a spot on this team and many of us are going through it together.”

Broyes is one of those players fighting for a spot. He’s spent most of the time practicing with the Lions’ “B” group of receivers that are long shots to make the roster. This week, he’s moved up into the “A” group.

In two seasons in the NFL, Broyles had 30 catches for 395 yards and two touchdowns but each season—like his last at Oklahoma—ended prematurely due to injury.
