Former Western Heights football coach Rick Roop was killed in an accident at a fertilizer plant in Frederick on Thursday, the Altus Times reports.
Roop was the current assistant principal at Altus Intermediate School and previously served as the athletic director. He also played football at Central State and later served as principal at Hoover Middle School in Oklahoma City.
According to Frederick police, Roop fell from a grain car at Tillman Producers Co-Op Fertilizer Plant and was unresponsive. Roop was transported to Memorial Hospital in Frederick, where he later died.
An eyewitness report said Roop was standing on a rail car taking grain samples using a 10-foot brass pole, but at one point hit electrical lines above him. Sparks then started to fly and Roop fell to the ground.
The Altus Times also said an investigator with the State Medical Examiner’s Office is assisting with the ongoing investigation of the accident.
Here is a 2008 story from The Oklahoman archives on Roop’s recovery from pneumococcal meningitis.
