LAWTON — A judge has sentenced a former Fort Sill soldier to life in prison for the beating death of his 10-year-old stepson.

Comanche County District Judge Gerald Neuwirth followed the jury's recommendation when he handed down the sentence to Lancey Ray on Tuesday. A jury convicted Ray last month of first-degree murder in the December 2010 death of Malik Ray.

The 39-year-old must serve 85 percent of his service — or about 38 years — before he is eligible for parole.

A local newspaper reports that Ray's attorneys say they will appeal the jury's verdict.

Prosecutors accused Ray of beating the boy with a small wooden board and belt and forcing him to sit outside in freezing temperatures.
