Who has been most impressed with Oklahoma?

At the moment, the writers are more enamored with Florida, while the coaches narrowly prefer the Sooners.

Dec 8Is Sam Bradford the favorite?

NewsOK Related Articles

At least according to the polls.

In the Associated Press poll, Florida is ranked No. 1 with 50 first-place vote. OU is second, with only nine first-place votes.

But in the USA Today coaches poll, OU is ranked No. 1 with 31 first-place votes, while the Gators are second with 26 first-place votes.

Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer, Oregon’s Mike Bellotti, Texas’ Mack Brown, Kent State’s Doug Martin, Buffalo’s Turner Gill, Connecticut’s Randy Edsall, Indiana’s Bill Lynch, Georgia’s Mark Richt, Florida International’s Mario Cristobal, Tulane’s Bob Toledo and San Jose State’s Dick Tomey all had OU third.

UCLA’s Rick Neuheisel had OU fourth.

And the rest had the Sooners either first or second.

What are Sam Bradford’s chances of winning the Heisman Trophy?

Bradford is the favorite, but this could end up being the tightest Heisman race in years.

Texas quarterback Colt McCoy will garner a lot of Big 12-area votes. Writers in the press box of Saturday’s Big 12 title game who admitted they were voting for McCoy all said that while McCoy’s statistics aren’t as impressive, he doesn’t have as good a supporting cast as Bradford. Also, those voters who still believe Texas should be ranked ahead of OU could award Heisman consolation votes to McCoy.

Then, of course, there’s reigning Heisman winner and Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, who left a strong impression in the SEC Championship.

Tebow will probably carry the South and a good chunk of the Mid-Atlantic vote, which means it could come down to how coastal voters view the three quarterbacks.

Bradford, however, should do well with those constituents.

How healthy will OU be for the national title game?

Barring any unforeseen injuries between now and then, the Sooners should be as healthy as they have been in months.

Middle linebacker Ryan Reynolds, who had season-ending knee surgery, is out. That leaves middle linebacker Austin Box and defensive end Alan Davis, who are both recovering from knee sprains, as the only players in question.

Coach Bob Stoops, however, said he expects both Box and Davis to be back for the national title.

Defensive end Auston English returned to the field Saturday for the first time in three games since suffering a knee sprain and played relatively well.

Wide receiver Manny Johnson, who dislocated his elbow in October, is still not 100 percent. But time off should get him closer there.

Defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger, who’s been hobbled by a sprained foot since Week 3, should also benefit from time away from the field.

Last year, Ryan Broyles excelled at playing West Virginia QB Pat White on the scout team. Do the Sooners have anyone capable of emulating Tebow?

That’s going to be a tough one, since Tebow also runs like a fullback.

But Stoops had an interesting suggestion Sunday night.

"Maybe Matt Clapp,” Stoops said of his 235-pound fullback. "We need a big physical guy.

"But I don’t think Matt can throw very well. In fact, I know he can’t.”

DeMarco Murray was actually a four-star recruit out of high school, Brandon, but you're right.

That's why I always say let USC have all its 5-star athletes because Carroll's just wasting talent while Stoops is getting who he wants and turning them into champions. Just look at White and Bradford. Neither were highly recruited out of high school. Mark Sanchez was one of the top QBs coming out of high school and look who's have the better season.

Just don't overlook Tebow's 43 RUSHING touchdowns.

Well that was a decent comment by a Texas fan. I was beginning to think they were all morons. I don't like being at odds with Texas, because we are neighbors and have lots in common. Texas stadium is named after an OU All American Quarterback, Hollis, OK native Darrell K Royal. Royal, an Oklahoman, led Texas to greatness in the 60's and 70's as their head coach. Many fine Texas young men have wanted to play for a national powerhouse in OU and have found a home here in Oklahoma. My momma was a native Texan and my dad a native Oklahoman. No wonder I'm so confused! Boomer Sooner! Go Big Red! I bleed Crimson!

I hate to say it but I hope OU beats the crap out of Florida. I am tired of the endless SEC bragging. If OU wins big, there is a very good chance that Texas gets the AP championship. As a fan of the Big 12 that would be a good outcome given the controversy of the 3 way tie. This was not supposed to be Texas year and for them to finish this high and beat the BCS champ head to head speaks volumes of the quality of the conference. Texas also needs to beat Ohio State badly. I am a UT graduate and a season ticket holder for many years. I have enjoyed TEXAS/OU since the mid-70's and wish OU well in the BCS championship. Good luck, okies don't let the conference down! PS wait till next year in Dallas, 09 will be a championship year for UT.

I for one am sick and tired of hearing about Florida and the Tim Tebow Show. Think about this; Sam had nearly 4500 yards passing WITH two 1000 yard rushers. How can Tebow compare to that? Had Sam been required to be the offense, his numbers would be astronomical.

Don't give me all that hullabaloo about Tebow's numbers.
Chris, Hesston - Dec 8, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Cry me a river Texas. If Tebow had not won the Heisman last year, we would not hear about him this year. If he wins again, the Heisman trophy is officially a joke.

Jo-

The kickoff return team isn't bad. Do you see us not getting the ball past the 20 when Iglesias and Murray are catching kicks and running them back? No. Why do I ask? Because that is OUR KICKOFF RETURN TEAM!

Our Kickoff COVERAGE UNIT is egregious. Not vice versa.

Since you screwed up that simple distinction, your argument is hereby defunct and overturned. Thanks for playing.
Chris, Hesston - Dec 8, 2008 at 9:36 pm
From Rivals.com
The three voting coaches who faced Oklahoma and Texas – Missouri's Gary Pinkel, Texas Tech's Mike Leach and Baylor's Art Briles – voted the Sooners No. 1.
None of the computers, 40 of the 113 Harris voters and 13 of the 61 coaches ranked Texas ahead of Oklahoma.

Four questions for Stoopsy at his press conference on Tuesday.
1. Your kicker has had plenty of practice kicking off with all the scoring, how come he can
only get the ball to inside the opponents 15 yd. line with no wind blowing against him?
2. With all the scoring and kicking off, how come the kick return team is still so bad, giving
up a record number of kick return TD's and letting the opponent have an average starting
1st down on their own 35 yd. line?
3.How can a fan at home watching the game on TV know what play the opposing team is going to run by seeing the formation and the OU defensive Co-o on the side line who
makes the D calls can't. Does he not understand the term "tendencies"?
4.Why do the media people "lob soft-balls" at Stoopsy on Tuesdays and not ask the questions
that the fans that pay their hard earned money for tickets, gas, lodging, food, airfare, rental cars, crowd hassle, etc. want to hear and be answered? I know don't tell me, the media is
riding the OU gravy train, we would all like to be on that one, RIGHT!

I know Tebow is a fine player, but he doesn't have the speed of some QB's that we've played. If that is the case our D Line and Backers will knock the Christmas Turkey stuffing right out of him!

I just watched another show on ESPN that featured a discussion on whether OU deserves to be in the NC instead of Texas. Guess what the consensus was among the ESPN know it alls? Keep hating OU, America. Stoops teams love to be hated. They take it out on their opponents. Ask Chris Weinke and the other Seminoles from 2000. BOOMER SOONER!!!!!

Robert, I remember. With the distraction of Weinke (sp) winning the heisman, Offensive Coordinator Mark Richt leaving for Georgia and the OU defense getting very little respect - I was shocked (I was there) how the OU defense played that day.

Jim - same thing happened when we beat Florida State in the NCG. Im not sure people are willing to give Tebow a second Heisman. I have no problem with either Bradford or McCoy.
Robert, Oklahoma City - Dec 8, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Geez, the one and seemingly ONLY OU fan at ESPN said that he will now vote Tebow over Bradford. Thanks Skip

Tebow has 210 yards passing and 57 yards (I think this is right) rushing - and he is the greatest

I hope ESPN continues its lovefest with the Longhorns, promotes Tebow (was McCoy) for Heisman, that the OU defense is weak and to top it off - that Tebow wants to play against OU/Big XII defense. Why, Stoops teams seem to play better as the underdog and mad.

They say OU has this big supporting cast....Iglesis didn't have any big time offers besides OU coming from high school I think he was either a 2 or 3 star athlete. Manny wasn't heavily recruited either. Broyles chose OU over OSU....with the exception of Jermaine and Murray (who is just now starting to come back along) OU’s offensive weapons are "So-So athletes" at least thats all they were supposed to be coming out of high school. Good coaching and discipline plus Sam Bradford and the O-line has made this offense lethal. My Thought is SCREW the HEISMAN Sam just go out and do what you have to do on Jan. 8 and then you'll have the last laugh. Colt and Tebow are awesome quarterbacks but I don't see how Tebow stacks up to Bradford or Mccoy. If Mccoy wins it I'll be happy for the kid but no way does Tebow get it just because his name is "TEBOW"
Brandon, edmond - Dec 8, 2008 at 2:51 pm
I am greedy, I want Bradford to win the HEISMAN and the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, LOL I agree that Bradford is going to get screwed, because whinnie Macky and the sports media. Media is saying that Texas would not be the same team without McCoy, the same can be said of OU without Bradford. Halzel is a good QB and could start for a lot of teams. By the way doesn't Texas normally out recruit OU?
Randy, Uvalde - Dec 8, 2008 at 11:58 am
Let us pray that Sam does not win the Heisman: its a curse on both the Sooner's NC hopes and Bradford's NFL prospects. Of the three guys, he has the best NFL potential, assuming he does not go to Detroit. But in KC or Seattle, he'd develop into a very, very good QB, in the Brady/Manning style.
CECIL, Encinitas - Dec 8, 2008 at 11:02 am
The Heisman Trophy has become a popularity contest... a joke... a love-fest by the media for certain guys on certain teams.

Voters make their minds up when there are still games to be played. Plus, these are the same people who tried to manipulate the system to get Texas into the Championship game by changing their votes during that last week of the season.

Do we really think this award has the merit that it once did? If your team isn't a top team, you're out. If you aren't a QB, RB or receiver, you're out. If you've lost more than 2 games, you're out.

It's a joke.
Grant, Edmond - Dec 8, 2008 at 10:52 am
Let Tebow or McCoy have the Heisman. Only ONE Heisman winner won the National Title. I'm sure Bradford wants the big chrystal ball more than a door stop.
Calvin, Midwest City - Dec 8, 2008 at 10:07 am
I hate to say it, because I really think Bradford should win the Heisman, but he won't. I predict he'll finish third, behind Colt McCoy and Tebow. McCoy will get the sympathy vote (I'm sure Mack will be on all the talk shows whining about how Colt deserves it), and then Tebow will win a bunch of votes for parading around the sideline with all that blood on his face in the Fla State game. It sucks, but that's what I predict.
Richard, Chelsea - Dec 8, 2008 at 9:47 am
Hiffdas, you are right on. Some talking head needs to take this argument and run with it. And Colt should stand up for his teammates when he gets the chance. You know Shipley and Cosbey have to be ticked hearing this over and over. Weren't all the UT starters part of a top 5 recruiting class? What a bunch of trash to undercut Bradford from getting the Heisman.
NB Sooner, New Braunfels - Dec 8, 2008 at 8:57 am
Supporting cast? Bull crap. UT recruits extremely well, they are doing LESS WITH MORE, not more with less. Sam Bradford makes his supporting cast look great by stretching the field and putting the ball on target.
Hiffdas, fdassfas - Dec 8, 2008 at 7:24 am
Colt will win because of the sympathy vote. And they think they got screwed; what about Boise and Taco Tech.
