Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing this week in northeastern Oklahoma with dangerously low wind chills expected Wednesday night, according to the National Weather Service.
Highs recorded today in Grove, Jay, Miami, Bartlesville, Tahlequah and Vinita were from 15 to 20 degrees with wind chill readings 3 to 8.
Snow and bitter cold temperatures are expected again Wednesday overnight with snow accumulations less than four inches. Northerly winds are expected to be about 20 mph causing problems for motorists.
"With those kind of wind gusts people should stay off the road," said Glenda Longan, Miami emergency management director.
Because of the extreme cold air in northeast Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas there is a concern for people who must be outside, Longan said.
While the Miami School District dismissed classes today, teachers were required to attend. Many other schools in the region were closed after the area received about four inches of snow during the weekend.
All the main roads were cleared of snow this afternoon, but rural roads remained slick in spots, Longan said. Most street crews were cleaning bus routes, she said.
