The Silver Strings of Putnam City will hold its fifth annual Stars and Stripes Forever 5k Run/Walk at 7 a.m. Friday at Lake Hefner’s Stars and Stripes Park.

Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to participate. Stars & Stripes Forever 5k raises funds to benefit The Silver Strings of Putnam City, an after-school strolling orchestra program.

The Silver Strings of Putnam City is composed of musicians from Putnam City High School, Putnam City North High School and Putnam City West High School. The group regularly performs for banquets and civic organizations across the state and volunteers its talent to the community by performing in hospitals and senior citizen centers.

Unlike a traditional orchestra, a strolling strings group is a company of musicians who stroll among the audience while performing.

Stars and Stripes Forever 5k boasts more than 300 runners and walkers annually, and this year looks to surpass that figure.

At this year’s race, runners will enjoy a professional chip-timed 5k sanctioned by USA Track and Field. T-shirts and goody bags are guaranteed to the first 400 participants. In celebration of July Fourth, free watermelon will be served while supplies last.
