Fox Sports Oklahoma goofs by joining OSU-Lamar game in progress

by Mel Bracht Published: September 16, 2013

I heard from sportscaster Ron Thulin after my Remote Patrol item Saturday night on the Lamar-OSU game on Fox Sports Oklahoma. I had noted that Thulin and analyst Dave Lapham had not made any reference during the telecast to the Sports Illustrated’s five-part series, “The Dirty Game,” on improprieties in the OSU football program. I said this wasn’t a surprise because OSU owned the rights to the telecast. Thulin corrected me, saying he had mentioned it during the opening of the telecast.
“By the way the very 1st thing we mentioned in the open was would recent allegations be a distraction. OSU never suggested what we should say during the telecast,” Thulin said in an email.
The problem with mentioning it only in the opening is that few people in Oklahoma saw the segment. FSOK and Fox Sports Southwest didn’t pick up the game until after OSU’s first touchdown because North Texas’ 34-27 victory over Ball State went long. How many people in Oklahoma really cared about that game? FSOK should have picked up the Lamar-OSU telecast from the start, noting it would give an update on the earlier game. That’s what ESPN, “the Worldwide Leader in Sports,” would have done.
Fox Sports spokesman Ramon Alvarez noted that Fox College Sports Central, which is carried by Cox in Oklahoma, was the only system that carried the game in its entirity.
It was that kind of week for the Cowboys. They own the rights to the game telecast, and they can’t even get FSOK to carry the whole game.
