Nothing like stately old Toby Greene, who took the Cowboys to the 1959 NCAA title. Crusty Chet Bryan, who made three trips to the College World Series in 1960s. Gary Ward, more marshal than even Matt Dillon.

Put Anderson on the cattle drive with those lonesome doves, and he's in charge of the chuckwagon. Put him a few blocks south on the steps of Old Central, and he would pass for an English professor.

But Anderson is a coach, thank you, and a darned good one. His Cowboys beat Western Kentucky 5-3 Friday night in Stillwater's first NCAA baseball regional since 1997.

Tyler Lyons pitched 8 2/3 strong innings, Matt Hague homered, left fielder Neil Medchill made a home run-saving catch and the buzz of a packed Reynolds Stadium (4,000 fans) made you think that the glory days of State baseball soon could return and maybe already have.
