NORMAN -- Fraternity members at the University of Oklahoma raised $6,000 to help children fighting childhood illnesses during the fourth annual All Greek Boxing Tournament.

Members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity sponsored the event, which was held last Friday, to raise money for Children's Medical Research Institute in Oklahoma City.

"A special thanks to the boxers. It was their efforts that will help doctors fight childhood illnesses," said Andrew Solomon, event chairman.

Solomon said the event raised twice as much money as it did last year. Modern Woodmen of America will match up to $2,500, increasing the donation to $8,500.

"That then will be given to the Oklahoma Matching Funds Program, which doubles it twice more, giving a grand total of $34,000," Solomon said.

Solomon said about 36 fraternity members boxed this year and about 1,200 OU students attended the tournament.
