McKoy Beard is a happy 2-year-old with sunny blond hair and a contagious smile. He loves pretending to be a superhero with his twin brother and best friend, Sawyer.

McKoy’s Sand Springs family includes his mother, Christy, his twin brother and three older sisters. His father, Shawn Beard, lives nearby and sees McKoy regularly.

On July 18, while McKoy was swimming, the family noticed a lump on the right side of his stomach and took him to their family practitioner. An ultrasound led doctors to diagnose McKoy with stage four kidney cancer, also known as Wilms’ tumor, which caused the protruding lump.

“Stage four doesn’t mean it’s terminal,” Shawn Beard said. “It just means that’s where the tumor’s growth falls on a scale. It’s not stage five. The cancer has spread, but it’s centralized.”

The cancer is curable, doctors told Shawn Beard, so long as McKoy gets the medical treatment he needs. McKoy’s parents will do all in their power to ensure that happens, Shawn Beard said. He works as a pipeline scheduler, and Christy cleans houses.

When a friend learned of McKoy’s diagnosis, she set up fundraising accounts to help pay for his medical expenses.
