Bryce Camp, organizer of a candlelight vigil for the homeless man, known in Edmond as Bicycle Bob, said $600 was collected at the vigil, which more than 250 people attended.

The remainder of $5,249.09 was donated to a bank account set up by Edmond police, initially intended to be used for the funeral. Everything needed for the funeral, however, was donated.

All of the money now is being given to the First Christian Church Breakfast on Boulevard program and the Hope Center, a nonprofit that helps the needy in the Edmond area.

Honestly, it boils down to what the hell is it to those of you that wouldn't have given a dime to a homeless person. Not all homeless people are alocholics either. Some of them just choose that way of life because they don't want a home and any kind of responsiblities. I happened to know Dwite from back in 1974 and 75 when he was down here in Haileyville with his dad Jack and he has another brother that is also homeless. His dad wasn't homeless. But, yes they did have some mental problems but are you going to hold that against a homeless man because if you are then your in sad shape people, it's better to give than recieve. Maybe if some of you on here that think they know it all and are putting down those that gave so much would give a little eachday your life wouldn't be so miserable at all. It makes you feel good when you do something for someone that totally deserves it..You know what Dwite didn't ask to be put in this world of hate as a mental person. How would you feel if you or a loved one were mental and people made fun of you and didn't care at for you. How you feel..You need to walk a mile in Dwite's shoes and think before you open your ignorant mouth's and say such ugly things about those kind of people that cannot help it..It's really ashame that your I.Q. is that low.. I would never make fun of a homeless person or make fun or make ignorant statements of a mentally ill person.. Yes he was semi mentally ill. I know because the whole family was. They are kin to my sister-in-laws side of the family.. You people make me sick! To those of you that show you cared about Dwite your awesome people and to the Police Department it shows that you guys have a heart also..This story will touch a lot of people and Dwite didn't die without a lot of love. I am sure he never realized just how much everyone did care about him.. God Bless all of you in Edmond!

You guy's that our talking about the rich people in Edmond make me sick. For one thing Bob was given food and blankets and even more so in the winter he was given shelter. He turned it down but the people of downtown edmond, schools and the Edmond police kept an eye on him. This man wanted to stay on the streets and did not have a problem with it. We donated money because we care about him and did take care of him. I do wish that every area take care of there homeless the way we took care of Bob. Maybe if people stop pointing fingers all of the time and stand up and do things in thier area this world would not be a bad place to live in. Come together in your city and see who is without a job and the ones that have companies hire those people that need a job give to families that don't have food not just at thanksgiving but all the time. Have a big garage sale not to make money but to trade on cloths that your not wearing that someone need. "WAKE UP PEOPLE IT STARTS WITH US"

You know, a majority of the citizens in Edmond aren't rich. I wish people would stop making such a judgement. What do you think Dwite would have done or did with any money people would have given him with their fat wallets? He spent it on food and beer. He was a mentally ill alcohalic who chose his life. Also he received a monthy check as stated in previous articles.

Edmond residents didn't "put him out in the streets". He ate at the First Christian Church breakfast daily, who do you think sponsers that? Edmond residents. He ate at the Around the Corner Cafe, who do you do you think owns that? Edmond residents. I'm proud that people even donated.

Why is it people think it's everyone's fault homeless people are homeless. Most chose this lifestyle. The others can seek help at many of the charities and shelters available. It's America and living where ever you want is a choice. They aren't refugees.

Jeff, I wasn't a Reagan fan but it wasn't just him that brought this about. The ACLU, of which I AM a fan contributed to this problem significantly. "A person who is neither a threat to him/herself or others ought not be involuntarily incarcerated" was their position. While noble, it is a contributing factor to this specific issue but even more to the other "Bicycle Bobs" whom we will shortly read about that refuse to get in the van from the "Jesus House" that will take them to shelter when the temperature drops to dangerous levels. We will read about "the homeless guy found dead."

How much did you donate Louis? Do you know how much anyone else donates and to what causes? How much would have been adequate in your high minded opinion? What fricking business is it of yours anyway? Before you get so high and mighty, maybe you should get facts in hand before getting critical of anyone else.

May you rest in peace Dwite!!! The Lord be with you!!!

So this man was such a "staple" of the Edmond "community" and all those rich people talked about how much they "cared" about him yet only $5,000 has been donated? That is a joke. I bet there are easily 100 people that live in Oak Tree that could donate $5k and not even miss it. Bunch of Hypocrites!

"We the Poeple" are the government, get off your lazy *** and do something about it.

Some of you bleeding hearts need to get off of your high horse. Many homeless like Bicycle Bob have mental problems and are not able to take care of themselves the way that most us would like. With that said, there are two paths for those people. One path is for those people to submit to society taking care of them and the other is take care of themselves as best they can. Many of the ones who end up the street do so because they will not be told what to do or how to live. That is their right as free citizens. We, as a society, do not have the right to impose our values on anyone, regardless the motive. This being said, there are still many others who are homeless that can be helped and would appreciate the assistance. Do something yourselves instead of constantly pointing the finger at others or blaming the government. The government is not there to fix every possible problem or injustice. You feel that strongly about it, put your time and money where you mouth is.

Yea, I think it is funny too that everyone mourns him now and wants to give him donations, but I bet they wouldn't have given him a dollar on the streets had he asked.

And don't get started on the Christian thing. South park did a funny episode about Christians in ethopia handing out bibles when those people don't need bibles they need food. You can't eat a bible.

Fernando has a point, but the larger point here is why people like Bicycle Bob are on the streets to begin with. Many homeless people are mentally ill and have no place on the street, but thanks to Ronald Reagan and his "conservative revolution", thousands of mentally ill were turned out onto the streets from facilities where they were housed and cared for in the early 1980s due to budget cuts (remember, this is the same President who deemed ketchup a vegetable-at least when it came to school lunch programs).
The real tragedy is that there are Bicycle Bobs all over the metro area and state, but nearly all are forgotten and when killed will not receive any attention, nor will anyone care.
Yes, it is wonderful that SOME citizens of Edmond cared enough about Bob to give him food and money, but we as a society need to do more about the homeless instead of turning a blind eye to them, or thinking they are all drunks and losers.
It's a travesty that a country as rich as the US has as many homeless people as we do, but that is what happens when we elect officials who only care about catering to the rich.

I think people enjoy flowers much more when they are alive than when they are dead...

Fernando, you as a Christian, should not judge people. Especially when you have no idea what you are talking about.

Fernando,

Enid is a long ways from Edmond. If you knew anything of this man, you'd know he was loved by all, he was looked after by many, he was even offered jobs on a continual basis for shelter, which he refused. He chose his life, and others tried to help and did, and they continued to after he died. Don't talk about things you know nothing about.

mmmm bunch of hypocrites. I am wondering why he was homeless but everything was donated to cover the funeral coasts. We as Christians should one another while WE are ALIVE not dead.
