PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The Museum of the South Dakota State Historical Society is debuting an exhibit at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre focusing on furniture found in the home.

"Furniture: The Fancy & The Functional" opens Saturday with free admission, a public reception and refreshments from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The exhibit in the Marvis T. and Florence Brown Hogen Gallery allows visitors to study both the fancy and functional materials in current and past homes. Artifacts including a famous wooden desk to a metal dinette set all come from the museum's permanent collection. Some of the furniture on display has never been exhibited before.

Museum Director Jay Smith says staff worked hard to create a visually stimulating and educational exhibition with hands-on activities.
