JACKSONVILLE, Ill. (AP) — The coal-industry group working with the Department of Energy to build the FutureGen clean-coal project says it has signed deals with 17 unions ahead of construction.

The FutureGen Alliance said Monday that it has signed deals with local unions representing electricians, painters, ironworkers and others in western Illinois.

The FutureGen project is still awaiting final approvals from federal regulators.

The project would refit a coal-fired power plant in Meredosia to capture carbon dioxide from coal before it is burned. The carbon dioxide would be stored underground.

Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change when released into the atmosphere.

The FutureGen Alliance has said it expects construction to start this year.
