College football: Ranking the 26 coaching changes 13/27

15. ELLIS JOHNSON, SOUTHERN MISS Ellis Johnson replaces Larry Fedora. Johnson is a solid coach -- Steve Spurrier's defensive coordinator at South Carolina -- and he's also been d-coordinator at Alabama, Clemson, Mississippi State and even Southern Miss. But Johnson is 60. He last coached at Southern Miss in 1989. This smacks of a school hiring someone they were confident wouldn't leave for a better job. Maybe that will pay off. But usually it doesn't. Southern Miss could be paying for the crime of firing Jeff Bower four years ago. The Eagles had a very good coach who had no desire to leave; Bower went 119-83-1 in 18 years at USM.
